Welcome to the 2010 London 10th Anniversary WALK for ALS Website
We are planning our 10th ANNIVERSARY ANNUAL LONDON WALK. Being diagnosed with ALS is a devastating blow to close to 1000 persons who live with ALS in the province of Ontario and to more than 3000 persons across Canada. These are very sad statistics and the numbers being diagnosed keep growing each year. WE MUST ALL STEP UP AND DO OUR VERY BEST TO RAISE FUNDS FOR PATIENT CARE AND EQUIPMENT. In doing so we will help our loved ones lead the most comfortable life that is possible for them while coping and enduring the huge challenges and battling this very debilitating disease each day. ALS is a dreadful disease which inflicts tremendous costs both financially and emotionally on persons who have ALS and their families. A large part of the funds raised through the Walk for ALS will also go toward ALS RESEARCH helping scientists in their work searching to find a cure for ALS which can never happen soon enough.
We are very grateful for the generous support given by our Team Captains and their team members and our wonderful Local Sponsors along with our many invaluable Volunteers who work together tirelessly to make our London Walk a huge success. YOUR HELP brings HOPE . In 2009 our London Walk successfully raised over $156,485.00 bringing the total funds raised in the London Walk during the past nine years to more than $1,484,168.00. This is a tremendous accomplishment however each of us must continue to press on with courage and conviction, even in these very challenges times to reach our goals.
We have set our London Walk goal for this year at $155,000.00 hopefully we can reach our goal and surpass it as we did in 2009. LETS MAKE OUR 10TH ANIVERSARY WALK JUST THE GREATEST ONE YET!
You might choose to create a "Team Fundraiser" to raise funds for your team. Be creative, think outside the box and plan new activities to raise donations. Every penny counts! Our combined efforts will continue to make a huge difference for persons living with ALS till that day when a cure is found. WORKING TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!
We invite you to attend our London Walk and enjoy messages from special guests, special music, and face painting and fun for the children along with lots of delicious food and drinks that has all been donated. "Have your breakfast at the Walk"! Enjoy walking with family and friends and make new friends. This page provides you with the tools to create your own fundraising website or to donate to one of our Walk Teams listed below.

On Saturday, September 11th, pledged walkers from across London and the surrounding area will unite at Springbank Gardens in a joint effort to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s disease.
Parkinson SuperWalk emcee Nick Paparella will kick-off the event, followed by professional mixed martial artist Sam Stout, North American Welterweight Kickboxing champion and Canadian Lightweight Muay Thai champion, leading warm-up activities. Live entertainment, barbeque and prizes will continue on throughout the day. Let the SuperWalk begin!
Parkinson SuperWalk is the single most important national awareness and fundraising event for Parkinson Society Canada (PSC), with 87 participating sites and committees from British Columbia to Newfoundland. This year, we hope to raise $3 million nationally and over $70,000 in London.
Carolyn Conners, CEO of Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario says, “It is hard to believe that what started out as a small, single family walk for Parkinson’s evolved into a national event that attracts family and friends from all across Canada. Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario began with one walk in 1995, raising $11,000 and has grown to 11 volunteer-driven walks. We are proud and appreciative of our Southwestern Ontario community for raising $2.16 million since our beginning. Clearly, this demonstrates the power of volunteers and is proof of the communities’ growing support and need for better services and further research to help our Parkinson’s cause.”
Parkinson’s is a slowly progressive, neurological disorder that makes the simplest tasks, like walking or eating, overwhelmingly difficult for someone who has the disease. The most common symptoms are tremors or shaking, slowness in movements, muscle stiffness and problems with balance. Other symptoms may also include fatigue, difficulties with speech and writing, sleep disorders, depression and cognitive changes.
Parkinson Society Southwestern Ontario is the regional voice of people living with Parkinson’s. Our purpose is to ease the burden and find a cure through support services, education, advocacy and research. What we count and measure reflects our values as a society. Roots of Empathy, an evidence-based classroom programme expands children’s capacity to understand and include the other. It is a pedagogy of hope which counters society’s spiritual flatness and apathy. The children learn through coached observations of a visiting infant and parent how to understand the emotions of a vulnerable baby. Finding the humanity in the baby allows them to find the humanity in themselves; a bridge to finding the humanity in others.
Mary Gordon, an internationally recognized educator, best-selling author, child advocate and parenting expert, founded Roots of Empathy in 1996 and the Seeds of Empathy in 2006. Both programs are informed by the power of empathy. Ms. Gordon is a member of the Order of Canada and an Ashoka Fellow. For more information, please visit www.kings.uwo.ca/campus_ministry or call (519) 963-1477.
